for amplified ensemble (flute, clarinet, accordion, mezzo-soprano, snare drum, piano, violin, and cello). Commissioned by Aksenov Family Foundation for a project Russian Music 2.1.
"X is where I am" is an intimate expression woven from interlaced chants, laments, nebulous memories, dreams, warmth, fragility, and silent words. The female voice plays a central role in the piece. Its ghostly presence is highlighted through a unique amplification: it connects the singer with the piano through a metaphysical umbilical cord. The piano transforms the voice timbre and extends the overall color palette of the ensemble. The latter exists as one meta-instrument that stretches out in the concert space.
In some way, "X is where I am" explores inner psychology, which uncovers a multitude of lenses giving new perspectives on the world around. This research was influenced by my interest in Internal Family Systems (IFS), which is a psychological method of seeing a person as a multitude of parts. Each of them has their own desires, fears, role, and personality. There are different relationships between them, but they all communicate through the one Self. I perceive sound and relationships between different sounds and instruments in a similar way.
The performative element in this piece is subordinate to the musical idea and the logic of sound traveling through space.
